Copy-Cat Starbucks Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate

 starbucks salted caramel hot chocolate

Yep.

They can’t keep something that good to themselves.  Give this a try and let me know if you think it is close.  I made it a little more chocolate-y by adding the bittersweet chocolate, you could go with dark or a mixture.Starbucks Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate Copycat Recipe

  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 oz semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 3 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt (the best you can afford)
  • 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar crystals
  • 1/4 cup whipped cream
  • 2 tablespoons caramel syrup, divided (recipe at the bottom of that page)

Bring the milk, sugar, and cream to a simmer.  Keep it just under a boil and stir in the chocolate until melted completely.

Add one tablespoon of the caramel syrup to a warm mug and swish it to coat the inside of the mug.

Carefully pour in the chocolate.  Top with whipped cream, add a drizzle of caramel, a sprinkle of the salt and a dusting of the turbinado crystals.

Enjoy the fact that while Starbucks *may* stop making this delicacy you never have to!

I am sorry, but this recipe is no good. It is way too thick and too sweet and tastes nothing like the hot chocolate at Starbucks. I tried adding milk and water to to make it drinkable, but nothing helped. :(

Luv luv luv this but I cant see wasting the over 300 calories fo a tall. So I get mine w/skim milk and no whipped cream. Its great….

Home Goods and Marshalls sell a boxed version of this, and they put butterscotch chips in it.

I found this recipe to be extremely sweet and overwhemling. I was excited to make this copy cat drink, but was dissapointed with how sweet and rich it was. I’m sitting here at the moment looking at my glass of hot coco and I just can’t get it down. I’m sorry this is so negative, but I really thought it would taste a lot better.

Thank you from the empty bottom of my cup for posting this recipe! I fell in LOVE with this Starbucks special last winter and am so excited to give your recipe a try!

The link to the caramel sauce is broken. Would you repost it? I don’t want to use store-bought if I can help it!

Starbucks has recently discontinued the Signature Hot Chocolate product which has virtually doomed my patronage. My drink is the Espresso Truffle (nearly exclusively), so I am saddened to see this product go. I understand their motivation behind its discontinuance. The Signature Hot Chocolate is delivered to their stores in packets which when mixed with nonfat milk, makes 1 gallon batches. The pre-mix is then stored in the barista refrigerator. This resulted in daily wastage if it wasn’t all used by closing time. What I don’t understand is why doesn’t Starbucks make it in a scoop-able or pump-able medium? This would enable the barista to make single servings and thus reduce the wastage completely. I am currently seeking Starbucks Signature Hot Chocolate on eBay and taste-alike recipes online; hoping that Starbucks does something about this.

To prochroma: I doubt you’ll receive this, but in case you do, I’m a Signature Hot Chocolate lover who’s also smarting over Starbucks’ decision to discontinue the SHC. I also work for an entertainment website in Fort Worth, TX, and I wanted to find some hard-core SHC fans to talk to about what makes it so special. If there’s any way you get this, could you drop me a line at hsvokos@dfw.com? Thanks, Heather

FYI The Salted Carmel Signature Hot Choc. from Starbucks also has a shot of Toffee Nut flavoring in it. This also adds to the wonderful drink!!!

[...] And why suggest what seems like a weak substitute for the SCHC? The majority of comments I read said that adding toffee nut syrup and caramel drizzle was NOT the same as a SCHC. I may try it since I really do miss the SCHC. Or I might try and make one myself using this recipe. [...]

Connor- I know that..But personally speaking…I like my version better, fat and all..when I splurge I liek to splurge big.
You do it your way and I will do it mine.

    Starbucks uses non-fat milk.
The cream, whole milk, and the chocolate adds way too much fat and sugar to it.

No offense tho, it’s exstreemly hard to make a copy-cat recipe and you did a good job.

I love this hot chocolate! Apparently they use an English Toffee syrup in it. I ask for a pump or 2 less to cut back on the sweetness and add a shot of espresso and ask for EXTRA salt topping. YUM!

Jo- I hadn’t thought of caramel corn..I thought chocolate covered pretzels..but you are right.

I can’t handle the feel of the to go cups. :/

I really like the Salted Caramel hot chocolate; the flavor makes me think of the combination of hot chocolate and caramel corn. I definitely detect a buttery popcorn-y taste. Also, I have no trouble drinking it from a go-cup; still yummy! Thanks for the recipe!
