A website called World Net Daily (whose name cleverly disguises the fact that it is a mouthpiece for right-wing extremists) published a piece yesterday calling soy “a devil food” and claiming that feeding it to young boys can cause them to turn out gay.
Soy is feminizing, and commonly leads to a decrease in the size of the penis, sexual confusion and homosexuality. That’s why most of the medical (not socio-spiritual) blame for today’s rise in homosexuality must fall upon the rise in soy formula and other soy products.
So what point am I trying to make here by quoting this drivel? Simple: don’t believe everything you read on the internet, especially when it comes to health news. First and foremost, common sense should prevail. If soy turns people gay, why isn’t the whole country of Japan homosexual?
Secondly, know what the source of the “information” you’re reading is. If there really is anything to this claim about the penis-shrinking effects of soy, why is it that no legitimate news sources are reporting on it? Chances are not high that a politically-motivated bigot will have the inside scoop on health research that no one else has. It’s entertaining that Mr. Rutz is so concerned about the soy contained in processed foods in America, but not, say, the corn syrup that is just as prevalent and a major contributor to the country’s childhood obesity epidemic. Bottom line: get your health information from health professionals, not religious evangelists.

Why isn’t the entire population of Japan gay? Why would they be when they consume way less soy per capita than Americans do? The population of Japan is 128,000,000 and they consume 4,455 tons of soy per year. The population of the U.S. is 307,000,000 and we consume 25,262 tons per year. With less than three times the population of Japan we consume almost six times as much soy.
Where are these stats from? Please name a source since it’s hard believe that Americans directly consume 25,262 tons per year. Is that number based on quantity grown in the U.S. & not consumed? Because the majority of the soy grown in the U.S. is fed to livestock/factory farmed animals that the average American then consumes through the animals meat and dairy.
Phytoestrogen is present in ALL plant foods – not just soy. So to say that soy is feminizing the population is a load of bull when you’d have to include every single vegetable, fruit, bean, seed and grain in that study too.
Think instead about all the hormones injected into cows, chickens, pigs, etc. which are banned in most other countries in the world.
roflmao…if you read further, he says that soy sauce is okay, it’s just the fermented soy milk that does it…that was great, I needed a laugh today :D
Katie – the one thing this farce of an article did for me was to spark my interest in all the real research results that are out there on soy. I’ll be covering some of them in future posts.
I’d like to see more studies on the long term effects of a soy based diets. It’s going to take more than one study to prove if this claim is valid. There are always news stories reporting why we should or shouldn’t eat this or that food. It’s hard to keep track of what’s good.
Vegetarian News…from the sublime to the ridiculous…
OK, I just can’t resist pointing to some discussion of the fact that a right-wing rag has published a piece saying that soy is “feminizing.” Seriously. That the increase of use of soy products is the cause of the “increase…
This is most definitely garbage. But – I did hear on WI Public Radio a few months ago about the dangers of soy. I’d be interested to hear both sides of the argument on this blog.
Thanks for the great veggie info daily!
OMG, and good point Saron! LOL.
According to the logic used by the people at World Net Daily, wouldn’t lesbianism be on the decline with this increase in consumption of soy products?
That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! (Coming from them, of course, not you.)
