The Best Chocolate Chip Muffins in the Universe

 chocolate chip muffins

Shiloh made these for breakfast on Sunday morning.  Actually she made them Saturday and the entire house was filled with the aroma of vanilla. It was incredible.  The girl can cook.

These are a soft and cake-y muffin full of flavor.  Use a good quality baking chocolate and  chop it up in random sizes for the best effect and flavor.  You can use any sort, we prefer bittersweet chocolate for baking at our house.

Chocolate Chip Muffins

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped candied orange peel, optional
  • 6 ozs bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.  Place liners in 12 muffin cups.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.  Beat in the eggs, one at a time.
  3.  Beat in the vanilla.
  4. Mix the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture alternately with the sour cream.  Begin and end with the flour.
  6. Quickly blend in the orange peel, chocolate, and pecans.  Spoon into muffin cups.  Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Wow – I just googled “Best Chocolate Chip Muffin Recipe” and this popped up. I’ve got 4 crazy boys stuck in the house on a snow/sleet day and I knew I needed something good. I didn’t have any sour cream, but I used regular cream (coffee/tea cream) and it was soooooooooooo good. I’m posting the recipe on the inside of my cabinet. Thank you!

I have also been searching for chocolate chip muffins for my daughter who is pickey.
She and also i love them. I add walnuts, cranberries, and candy ginger.

these really are the best. -I use plain yogurt instead of sour cream
This about the 5th time i have made them. can’t get tired of them!!!!!

Don’t have any candied orange peel on hand. Going to try this with some dried cherries and will substitute a bit of kirsch for one tsp of the vanilla. We shall see….

Hooper- sorry…it is 3/4 but that does make them quite sweet! I fixed the recipe.

I don’t see the amount of sugar to include. I used 1/2 cup and they tasted great. Lots of good chunks of chocolate and nuts.

Anything with orange, chocolate and sour cream and I’m there! Except I’m going to have to find a less decadent version. ;-)

I’ve been adding some plain yogurt to some of my muffins lately….probably does the same as your sour cream. I don’t know why, but they sure do taste more yummy…

I can see whre the orange would be a great addition… chocolate and orange have always been a perfect pairing…
