Smoking bans are becoming the norm. And everywhere you turn, there are articles and quit smoking campaigns explaining why and how you should give up. Giving up is definitely worth it, as Wade Meredith highlighted in his great article a couple of years back – What Happens to Your body if you stop smoking Right now?
But giving up ain’t easy. As an ex-smoker I’m well aware of this.
Over the years, companies have gathered huge profits by urging you to quit smoking through hypnosis, pills, patches, and gum.
Now high tech smoking gadgets are in the limelight. Here’s five that sound interesting…
1. The E-Cigarette
Looks like a cigarette. Feels like a cigarette. Acts like a cigarette. But isn’t as bad for your health. That’s the spiel that Golden Dragon Group Ltd, a Chinese company marketing this ‘electronic’ cigarette, claim.
The e-cigarette is battery operated and works by hearing and vaporizing tobacco instead of burning it. As a result, you get the nicotine fix and smoking experience without the harmful toxins.
You have to wonder, though, where these e-cigarettes will help you give up or simply create a surrogate for the real thing.
2. Nico-stopper
Looks like an MP3 player but don’t expect it to play your favorite songs. This nifty little gadget locks in your cigarettes and only releasaes them at preset intervals. And as the cigarette is released, the LCD screen flashes with self-help messages. (source)
3. Smoke Signals
Enlist your computer into helping you give up smoking with the Smoke Signals package that consists of
- a smart interactive case that holds a pack of cigarettes and monitors your habits and signals when to smoke.
- a personalized Quit Plan that is built to not only match your profile but also adjusts your profile as you progress.
- access to an online progress page which acts as your personal coach.
- daily emails and tips
- a DVD that offers a step-by-step guie to the Smoke Signal Process.
4. Quit Key
A handheld computer that creates a personal quit smoking program based on information that you provide.
5. Quit Smoking Plugin
Give up smoking by public exposure with the Quit Smoking Plugin. An interesting tool for those who have their own or are thinking of creating a word press blog. The plugin will display a counter on your blog showing all the relevant numbers – the time quit, how many not smoked, how much money saved, and how many lifetime hours regained.
So smokers, what do you think ?

Just a week ago, I was diagnosed with a pulmanary embolism. Blood clot in my lung. I am 49 years old and have smoked since I have been 18 years old. I quit 3 days ago. I am taking chantix. I could smoke right now and have 3 packs in my refrigerator now, but I have resisted. Please pray that I can stay smoke free. My father suffers from copd also and you would of thought that would of been enough for me to quit but it was not. Smoking is a terrible addiction
WHERE DO I BUY THESE TINY BLU ONE AT
just for everyone here to read, i’m seventeen years old and picked up the habit while hanging with the wrong crowd about three, yes three, years ago.. my mom has tried quitting her whole life, started at fourteen and is now almost fifty years old, and i’m quitting not only to get my singing voice back, but to push through the craziness and show her that she can do it as well.. about half a pack a day is my rate and hers is about two packs a day.. she’s been watching me withdraw and not give in for four, almost five days now.. i’m feeling rather weak willed, but i’m strong enough to do this. i don’t need patches, gum, or electronic devices.. i know i can do this, but with my anxiety issues it makes it even harder.. i love my mom and want to help her out too, so this isn’t just my fight it’s hers too. god bless all for sharing your own stories and encouragements for others! it is a really hard habit to break, especially when you’ve always enjoyed it, but ladies and gents, it is also a refreshing blessing to be able to breathe properly and have whitened teeth and be able to sing all the songs you want without feeling like you’re going to pass out! haha :]
Hi everyone
I am proud of you all for what you have done and achieved. I thought of going cold turkey but somehow that is not working for me. its feels every inch of my body is asking for a cig.
I hope I can do this!!

I quit 2 weeks ago due to an allergic asthma attack that nearly killed me. So this is one sure way to stop, however, I have read Allen Carr’s “easy way to stop smoking” and it really is fantastic. I stopped using his method but went back to it a few months later because I battled with putting on weight NOT because I craved cigarettes. His method really does work because it reprograms your mind as to how you think about smoking and let me tell you it really is about the addiction of the habit, not the nicotine. It is the habit itself that is so very addictive. In the beginning it feels like you have lost a best friend, like something is missing in your life and changing the way you think about smoking is the only way to do it.
I feel so free this time round – and there wont be a next time as I believe this was a warning I cannot ignore. Try Allen Carr’s book it really takes away the pain of stopping and the fear. You even smoke while reading the book – absolutely no pressure. Definitely worth a try – and no I am not sponsored by him or his publisher, I have just tried his way.
My problem with electric cigarettes is pretty well known. I do not believe they address the habit and may even make it worse as you do not get the desired affect a real cigarette gives you opening up the chance for relapse. I quit cold turkey 21 days ago and refuse to spend any money on anything when I kow that the power to quit and the will is in everyone because the desire for freedom is in all of us. After finally making the decision to quit mentally I was able to kick my addiction to cigarettes physically and I am never EVER going back…http://thedayiquitsmoking.blogspot.com/
I am on day 23 and not smoking. The patch seems to be the only thing that works for me. Although I still have cravings to smoke especially when I am bored. I try to keep myself busy and work out on the tread mill. I am just taking it day by day. Hopefully, this is it for me. Good luck to everyone quitting.
Fiona, went cold turkey and loving it. Read Allen Carr’s book and it works for me. I tried patches, champix, and lots of methods (once went to a hypnotherapist).
I feel so good I avoid eating sweets during the week and even lost some weight. Thanks for your support and validation as an emotional man. Stay positive, it’s a beautiful life to be clean and fresh! We are doing what is right for us:)
I used the e cig. U start off wit high nicotine then work your way down to no nicotine. U still get the smoke and the feeling of smoking but there I’s no nicotine so the craving goes away. I have quiet for 3 months now and I stopped smoking the e cig a month ago. I can honestly say that I have never felt better. I don’t even get cravings anymore, it’s the end for me
That’s commercxial gimmickry. If you really are concerned about your health, and of those surrounding you, sheer will and determination will make you quit smoking. No gadget whatsoever is required. Except perhaps if you have the bread to waste.
I have to agree with Antonio. It’s difficult to quit “Cold Turkey” but by no means is it impossible.
I smoked Camel Wides for 11 years at a rate of about a pack to two packs a day. I decided that I had enough and on June 8th, 2010, I put the pack on my dining room table and said no more. There are six cigarettes still in the pack and that pack is still sitting on the table—I should probably finally trash them.
Today (Sep. 11th, 2010) I have been smoke free for 93 days. I haven’t even taken one puff.
What really gave me the drive and determination to not smoke again was educating myself on cigarettes/tobacco products and with what it really does to your body. That and prayer is what has kept me centered.
Quitting for good is attainable.
What are you Yaz, a psychologist, or a psychiatrist? And possibly perfect, strong and without any flaws? Knob’ead.
Well done to everyone who is trying, and if you fail, never mind, try again!
And good luck!
i am going on day 3 of no more smoking, i am super proud of myself, but i do miss smoking… but it wont get me again i am on top of it…….
It is weakness that makes people smoke, neither addiction nor pleasure. It is that self destructive behavior of a weakened human spirit bent by a realm of greed.
That’s totally ignorant thinking nad judgemental. It is NOT a weakness but an addiction deeply ingrained habits. Some people are so arrogant!
Yaz, if you had any intelligence whatsoever, you would know that it is actually the mentally and emotionally strong who fall for the massive corporate and Gvt brainwashing that causes Smokers to be stuck in the cycle of smoking (and indirectly funding YOUR Tax cuts through Cigarette sales Taxes). Through peer pressure or widespread ignorance and propaganda, each smoker must teach themselves each day to ‘start’ smoking again, only the strong minded will believe that they can succeed and continue trying. The weaker willed individuals (like yourself) will quit or knowing they can not succeed, avoid starting in the first place. Whilst I am not in anyway an advocate of smoking, I am an avid activist against prejudicial ignorance from people like yourself. It is the widely populated belief that the smoker will gain some sort of physical or mental relief by smoking that attracts and keeps smokers trapped, not their intelligence, will power or lack of either as you suggest. Ask yourself this if you dare.. If smokers are weak willed and mental failures, how come so many of them manage to successfully quit what you call a self destructive behavior ? – Surely the weakness of greed would stop them from overcoming the effects of the most powerful and addictive drug on the planet. I for one applaud the efforts made by each and every smoker every day in their struggle to beat the ignorance and harmful effects caused by such morons as you Yaz ! And yes, I am an ex smoker.
Ok I am stoping cigrate from rigth now …. let see how much i sustain …
Today is day 5, having great success with CVS Nicotine Lozenges (Commit). Have had some cravings, usually about 4 a day. Some cravings are weak and some are stronger so I take a lozenge if I start to feel a little tempted. I can have up to 9 a day for the first 30 days. So far I have taken up to 4, today I’ve only had the one so far. I’m thinking I can do this! Give some glory to God! He helps me every day!
I have smoked for 26yrs up until 6 days ago. i was so poorly with a chest infection that i did`nt dare light one up for fear of actually choking to death.I have tried for so many years to stop smoking and tried almost every product on the shelves but nothing has worked for me and in all these years it never really mattered how poorly i was..i`d still light up. i think this time i`ve had a fright and i`ve gone cold turkey…i think, i`m quite proud of myself for getting this far and i`m taking each day as it comes, i`m refusing to give in to my cravings!
Ok, I quit yesterday at 10:00am and I’m moving toward day 2. I went cold turkey, I have been smoking for 10 years about 1-2 packs a day. To be quite honest I have not really needed anything more than willpower and a need and want to quit. I have been having quite heavy withdrawal symptoms, I feel lightheaded and a bit tired but I keep moving and thinking positive. One thing that helps me going is that it takes about 2 minutes to smoke a cig, I smoke 40 cigs a day. 40 cigs x 2 minutes = 80 minutes per day smoking. Thats 1 hour and 20 minutes a day smoking. Well now I just walk on my treadmill. It takes my mind off the cravings and gets my metabolism going. Well good luck to everyone and Ill keep everyone updated.
I’ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend – NLP! It eliminates the cravings.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.
Check out this article: http://quit-smoking-today.bestof-the-net.com/
it’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)
Good luck kicking the habit!

Hey Larry: I smoked for 36 years and just quit on January 17th, 2003. I read Allen Carr’s book and it was great. You can view it on line. One suggestion I do have is do NOT change any of your other habits except the smoking. IN other words, have your coffee, go out with friends when they are having a smoke. Do not try to avoid situations where smoking is present or you will feel like you are missing out on more than just smoking.
