Acne: It’s Not Just for Teens

Women’s Health Includes Skin CareIf there’s anything better than breakouts and fine lines at the same time, I don’t know what it is, man. I’m at that age where I’m starting to see where my first real wrinkles are going to be, yet I’m still dealing with zits. Not pimples, not blemishes, zits. ZITS. Seriously, are we not too old for this?

I’ve been using AcneFree once a day every day (following the itchy rash on my throat) and have gotten great results with it. This week, I started rotating it with the Mary Kay TimeWise skincare line, which promotes elasticity and prevents wrinkles, or so I’m told. Things are definitely improving, and I continue to receive compliments on how my skin has cleared up, but THEY’RE STILL THERE.

The good news (???) is that I’m not alone, which probably explains why people like the AcneFree folks and the inventors of Proactiv are wealthy and have great job security, no?

How do you deal with your adult acne?

While I still want to try a course of Isolaz — there are no local MDs who offer it, though I’m lobbying my dermatologist big time — I did recently start on Retin-A, which treats both acne and wrinkles. (Welcome to getting old, sister.)

I’m liking the results, especially when I put SkinCeuticals’ Emollience moisturizer over it. This regimen is noticeably helping my skin texture and cutting down on breakouts. The downside is that if your insurance doesn’t cover Retin-A, it’s about $175 per tube up front, plus about $50 for the Emollience. If you want to try them first, though, you can get samples of either or both from your derm/esthetician.

The Proactiv system really irritates my skin, and I swear its Repairing Lotion actually dried out my skin so much that it gave me premature wrinkles. It may work for people with super-oily skin, but definitely not for me.

As you know, I have lots of unsolicited advice about skincare, so let me know if you’re ever wanting info about a product. Bet I’ve tried it!
