Bald Man of the Week: Charlie Villaneuva

Let’s continue with basketball, but switch to the pros. The Baldiness Bald Man of the Week is Charlie Villaneuva.

Charlie Villaneuva

Charlie is rookie forward for the NBA Toronto Raptors and has been living with alopecia areata since childhood and works with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. Here’s a great little write up in the Toronto Star:

What the 21-year-old Villanueva has done is become a walking poster boy for the fight against alopecia areata, a disease many suffer from but few know about. He spends an inordinate amount of time delivering his message to kids who suffer from the disease, making sure they know they have someone to look up to, someone who overcame the psychological impact the disease can have to gain respect and fame. I’m not much of an NBA fan, but here’s hoping Charlie has a long and successful career. Hats off! to this week’s Bald Man of the Week

Give Me The Rock » Fantasy Preview – Milwaukee Bucks

[...] Charlie Villanueva – I would argue that Magloire’s departure benefits Villanueva the most on the Bucks from a fantasy perspective. He’ll now be asked to log some big minutes instead of splitting time with Magloire or in some kind of big man rotation. From the rankings, you can see that he slightly outplayed Bogut last year and – if forced to choose – I’d pick him to outplay Bogut again this year. Plus he sounds like an all around good guy and he is a bald man of the week recipient. [...]

Baldiness » Villanueva Traded To The Bucks

[...] Inaugural Bald Man of the Week, Charlie Villanueva, was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks last week. Villanueva, who suffers from alopecia areata and is a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, will be entering his second season in the NBA. His successful rookie season was marked by an appearance in the All-Star Weekend, Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors in December and a spot on the All-NBA Rookie First Team. [...]

Thanks, Angelo, for the comment. The number of players who voluntarily choose to shave their heads just proves that bbald is where it’s at!

With all these NBA players sporting the bald look, it’s kinda hard to tell who really has it! Yay for Charlie for proving all the critics wrong that the Raptors made a mistake by drafting him “too high” in the 2005 draft at number 7.

*Just leaving my mark at Baldiness… now off to the next hydrant….*

Baldiness » Charlie Villanueva Getting Well Deserved Praise

[...] Previous Bald Man of the Week, Charlie Villanueva is still garnering some well deserved media attention. This article from The New York Times highlights a professional athlete who hasn’t let is all go to his head. From the article: Thirteen-year-old Andrew McGarey came back beaming from Madison Square Garden last month and told his parents not to wash the T-shirt Charlie Villanueva had signed for him. [...]
