New cases of bird flu in domestic fowl were discovered in Egypt along the southern provinces of Sohag and Damietta. Tests were conducted on 20 people who were in contact with the infected birds.
This is Egypt’s first case in months, so there is concern for a resurgence of disease especially as migration season begins.
Six people have already died and 8 others have survived since the H5N1 virus was first detected in February, which prompted an immediate slaughter of all poultry kept in homes, in an effort to stop the spread. The last human fatality was in May.
