It looks like Proctor & Gamble scientists have just discovered the secret to youthful skin: it’s in 1,500 genes.
Using data from the Human Genome Project, P&G scientists identified some 1,500 genes that are responsible for how skin ages. Of those, up to 700 genes control how skin collects and retains moisture.

Genomics has key to keeping skin healthy and young.
According to an article in the Daily Mail, there are separate ways that skin ages, and each of these are controlled by their own set of genes:
- Collagen (the protein that gives skin its structure and strength) degrades.
- Skin loses its ability to keep it hydrated.
- Fewer skin cells are produced with time.
- Wrinkles are produced when the skin becomes more inflamed.
- Age weakens our skin’s natural defense against free-radicals.
- UV light from the sun damages genes that keep skin healthy.
Well, lucky for us, the P&G scientists are using this knowledge to create some powerful cosmetics to keep our skin looking younger and healthy. According to P&G research, the product niacinamide “brightens” the genes associated with producing fats on the skin, and “dims” the genes for inflammation. And you can find that formula in the new cosmetic line of Olay Professional Pro-X.
Incidentally, Lancome has also launched a new line called Lancome Genifique that were created to “optimize the activity of genes” for skin quality.
Now I haven’t tried these products myself or know anyone who does so I don’t know if the claims are true… but I might give it try. What about you?
