Taking care of your skin while pregnant (and sample give-away)

As women, we’re really at the mercy of our hormones. Many of us break out into pimples when our periods come, for example. Pregnancy is no different.

Some women find that pregnancy helps their skin, while others see their skin become drier or darker. And then, of course, there are the stretch marks that so many women would rather not have.

Other than regular skin care, is there anything you can do to keep your skin healthy and problem-free while you are pregnant? According to several websites and sources, yes, there is.

Stretch marks: Stretch marks aren’t just from pregnancy; anyone who has gained weight and lost it has the potential of developing these marks. The problem isn’t with the top layer, but all the layers, which is why often women find that creams or lotions don’t help prevent them. On the other hand, by using a good cream or lotion, it never hurts to keep your skin well nourished, so you’re not doing any harm by using most creams. Here are some other tips that might help prevent stretch marks:

  • try to gain the weight slowly, rather than in chunks – although in pregnancy, sometimes that just isn’t something you can control!
  • eat well: a balanced diet helps keep skin healthy
  • stay hydrated: drink plenty of water

Sensitive skin: Some women find that their skin becomes sensitive, itchy during pregnancy, especially towards the end. This could be from the hormones or the stress the skin is under from the stretching that is going on. If this happens, you can use a hypoallergenic cream that is recommended for pregnancy use. The moisture may help counter the sensitivity. Also, you may want to try using a milder clothes detergent as this may be part of the problem as well.

Skin problems like eczema or psoriasis: If you have eczema or psoriasis, it could go either way during pregnancy – improve quite a bit, or get worse. Here is where moisturizing with a good hypoallergenic cream will likely help, unless  your doctor has given you a prescription cream that you can use during pregnancy.

silkandhoneybodycream Two companies have given me skin products to give away to Womb Within visitors. Learning Curve, has given me an 8 oz. tube of Silk & Honey, All Over Moisturizing Body Cream with Shea & Mango Butter. It is paraben free and tummyhoney hypoallergenic. According to the website, it’s worth 14.99. I love the scent of shea butter products – Learning Curve is lucky I didn’t save this for myself! They also gave me a 4 oz jar of Tummy Honey Butter, for stretch mark prevention. It has an “anti-itch formula” and is also paraben free and hypoallergenic. The price on the website is 19.99.

kidGlovesThe other company is VMV Hypoallergenics. They gave me two products: Grandma booboobalmMinnie’s Kid Gloves Monolaurin Hand Sanitizer and Grandma Minnie’s the  Big, Brave Boo-Boo Balm. Both are coconut-derived skin-friendly products. The Boo-boo balm is priced at 20.00 on the website and the Kid Gloves is 30.00.

So, there you have it. Four products for pregnant women just waiting to be given away. If you would like to win one of these products, simply leave a comment in the comment section below about any post other than this one in the blog. Tell me which post you liked – and if you want, why you liked it. Or, leave a comment as to what you would like to see covered here at Womb Within. Either way,  you’ll get an entry into the give-away.

The give-away takes place from today, June 12th to Monday, June 23rd, at 11:59 PM. I will then take all the entries, assign them a number and randomize them. The top two will each be sent two products, from either of the two companies mentioned.

Good luck and start commenting!

(by the way, don’t forget, all comments count towards the perpetual comment contest. The information is in the side bar)

I liked the post When should you tell your coworkers that you’re expecting? = Because I have rh- blood I needed my blood work checked on a strict schedule, which meant I had to leave work early to get to the clinic before it closed, I ended up having to tell my boss a lot sooner than I would have liked that I was pregnant, and was nervous about it, because I was not planning on coming back after the baby was born, and thought that might have an impact in the office.

The video on the C-section was very informative. I am expecting my third child due in December and haven’t had to have one with my other two. I’m hoping not to have to have one with this one but it is nice to know what to expect in case I do. Thanks for the contest!

i think it’s easy to forget about ourselves when we become a parent. Sometimes even before they are born. Oh sure we try to eat well and avoid things that are bad for us but sometimes we forget to take care of our hair, teeth, and skin, all of which change when we are pregnant. I think your site is very informative. I have also had two c-sections but the healthy babies I had were well worth them.
