The first Thursday of every month is the b5media Science and Health Channel Theme Day. Today, everyone is coming up with a list of 10 interesting bits of information including 10 tips for Alzheimer’s patient caregivers at Alzheimer’s Notes and top ten list of supplies to have in a flu pandemic at Flu Patrol. Out of curiosity, I looked for a list of most common genetic diseases. Of course, it’s not that simple. Most diseases are caused by a combination of genes and environment. Even inherited diseases can be caused by more than one gene and influenced by environmental exposures. Here’s a list of the top 10 most common single gene Mendelian disorders in the UK and their frequency per 1000 births from the Genetic Interest Group.
- Familial combined hyperlipidemia – 5.0
- Familial hypercholesterolemia – 2.0
- Dominant otosclerosis – 1.0
- Adult polycystic kidney disease – 0.8
- Multiple exostoses – 0.5
- Huntington’s disease – 0.5
- Fragile X-syndrome – 0.5
- Neurofibromatosis – 0.4
- Cystic Fibrosis – 0.4
- Duchenne muscular dystrophy – 0.3

I live every day knowing I have the homozygote of Factor V Lieden. I try to not get depressed about it, but there are days when it is hard to deal with a disorder that can cost me a limb or my life. What makes it really scary is my 16 yr old son is a hetero. and developed a clot in his rt. leg that was more than 20 inches and has to be surgerically removed. last year. Other hetero. members in my family have also developed clots, so Factor V Lieden has had a tremendous impact on my family. I choose to live day by day and pray for the best.
Wow, being a “‘tard” can be genetic, too. And I find that very offensive, considering some of my family members. Jerk.
Cystic Fibrosis develops when neither gene work properly.
