The Air That We Breathe

Think that the air inside your house is safer to breathe than the air outside ?

Better think again.

359029_eww_pollutionAccording to this fascinating, yet scary report by WebMD, the air in our houses probably isn’t any better for us than the air out in the community.

In particular, they point out that a typical American home has over 500 chemicals floating around in the air. The number is based on a recent study done on indoor airborne contaminants in homes in Arizona.  That’s a huge number of chemicals. But what’s worse, as the WebMD articles points out, is that the scientists were unable to even identify 120 of these chemicals.

I don’t know about you, but I find that very concerning.

But wait. It get’s worse.  The article goes on to state that babies are at more risk of contamination than adults. Why?  Because they are closer to the ground and so, it appears,  are many of the contaminants.

Want to know more? Head on over to WebMD and have a read of 3 Shocking Facts About the Air in Your Home.

It’s enough to make you want to hold your breathe but as a medical professional, I must point out that doing that won’t be any good for your health either.

Instead, you might want to follow these ABCS of Healthy Indoor Air.

Shocking information in an informative post! Thanks for sharing..i think…i guess it’s worse to be blissfully ignorant while breathing these known and unknown airborne chemicals. my name is kevin, i work for http://www.icyou.com. icyou is a user-generated website for health care videos. i came across your blog as part of our outreach program. i’m actually looking through our videos right now to find something that represents something similar to what you’re talking about but i’m having no luck! clean air is tantamount to healthy living, yet we just take for granted that we’re getting the oxygen and don’t stop to think what else we could be inhaling (without triggers like a bad aroma). thanks for sharing, and for your health concerns check out icyou.com

here’s a link to a video so you can see some of the work we are doing. cheers!
