Yoga for low back pain may be a better solution than receiving conventional medical treatment for the pain.
A recent study from West Virginia University researchers revealed that the study participants doing yoga experienced less depression and pain, along with improved function compared with the control group that received standard medical therapy for back pain. The positive physical and mental effects experienced by the yoga group were maintained at six-month follow-up.
The yoga group practiced postures designed to relieve low-back pain during two 90-minute classes each week for 24 weeks. The study included 90 participants and is one of the biggest scientific studies ever done on the health benefits of yoga. The study findings were published in the September issue of the journal Spine.
Don’t forget that September is National Yoga Month. If you’re new to yoga, visit yogamonth.org to find out how to get a free week of classes in September.
