Babies at work

Via the Parenting in the Workplace Institute, I ran across a list of baby-friendly workplaces.

I’ve never seen babies in the workplace in action, so, I don’t know how it works, but, I’m not sure I could have done that. I wonder if I’d feel like I was giving neither my baby nor my job my full attention.

But, then again, it looks like it works at lots of places, so, who am I to judge?

Have you had any experience in a company that allows babies at work?

I just started a job that allows me to bring my 8 month old daughter. It’s been an amazing experience so far. You carry on work like you would normally do only while watching your child as well. I bring all the tools I need for my baby and can continue breastfeeding. Since there are other mothers and children there, you don’t feel awkward and if you have to take an important call or have a meeting, someone volunteers their time to watch your baby while you handle business. I feel like I’ve actually been more efficient and waste a lot less time. I have to honest though… it’s draining. However, I wouldn’t change it. I would encourage it. I feel like I have the best of both worlds by being a stay at home/work Mom and a valuable employee.

With the exception of on-site daycare, I can’t see how that would work. My girls, even as tiny babies, could cue a huge poop and a piercing wail at the sound of ringing business phone. Or rather, at the sound of Mama answering the business phone.

However, if this means on-site daycare, THAT rocks.
