I don’t even know what to think about this, my heart goes out to the family. A newborn baby is currently in critical condition after the family dog dragged it from the crib and to the woods.

The incident happened at about 1 p.m. at a home on Beaumont Road. Sheriff’s deputies say the parents, who brought the newborn home only Sunday night, were downstairs, the child upstairs in his crib, when the dog got inside. Police say the dog made it’s way into the home unknown to the parents grabbed the child out of his crib. - from WLEX-TV, Lexington
ABC News Reports that the family was preparing the house for the baby. Dad even went out to buy baby items such as a baby monitor, etc, when the dog decided to take the baby. Mom had just went downstairs for a moment to look at the shopping list before her husband left, but when she came up the baby and dog were both gone. Before anyone asks, I have no clue what type of dog this is, some online newspapers are stating it was a husky while others state it as an native american indian dog. Alexander Smith is only 4 days old, but for some unknown reason the family dog took him out of his crib and ran off with him. The family has stated that the dog has been known to swipe items off counters and hide them. My only guess is that is what he was doing. The baby is currently at the University of Kentucky Hospital in critical condition. He has broken ribs, two collapsed lungs, a skull fracture and many cuts and bruises. They are being very optimistic about the situation and there is no news on just what will happen to the family dog. So far no one has pressed charges. As for how they feel toward their dog:
“It wasn’t a vicious dog attack,” Smith said. “She had A.J. for 10 minutes on her own, and if you look at A.J.’s belly, there’s about 100 little marks. All the dog had to do was one bite and A.J. wouldn’t be here.”

I agree completely with you, if the dog never showed aggressive behavior and the father had other children that had been around it why would they even think twice on it. No I think this was a pure accident on the parents case. As far as the dog is concerned I have no clue what happened. Some state this type of dog is territorial, others state it was a family type of dog. I only have guesses myself:
Maybe the baby cried and she took the baby out of the crib thinking something was wrong.
the parents left the baby alone, maybe she took it out to find them.
Did the dog think the baby was hers? It was stated she had the baby like a pup.
Another thought, the baby was small enough to be a toy. Was this her toy and he was taking it to hide it?
There is no knowing what the dog thought. However, I don’t think I’d ever want that dog near my baby again. I do hope the baby comes out okay, right now he’s still in critical condition. The father announced earlier that the dog will DEFINITELY not be returning home. It also sounds like right now they will not be putting the dog down but giving her a new home.
a sad accident. i read on another blog very derisive remarks about the parents. c’mon folks…. this is a tragic event and we all put our kids down to sleep and leave the room. all of a sudden people are criticizing them for doing just that. i never sat by the cribs of my six kids and stared at them as they slept during the night and naps. always amazes me how parents get in trouble for napping and a kid leaving the house but if it happens at night it’s a different story. so let’s give these parents some real support and caring. a sad event and animals CAN get extrememly jealous. the dog needs to find another home. this one will not work. preferably a home with only adults present. NO KIDS!! the dog is not vicious according to reports, just a jealous animal. key word: animal… not human. therein lies the problem.
