Easy Ziploc Omelet Recipe

Do you hate it when you have to make omelets for the whole family?  The omelets don’t get cooked at the same time and it leaves your people eating at different times.  With this easy ziploc omelet recipe, you don’t have to wait around.  Everyone can enjoy their omelet at the same time.

1)  Have everyone write the name on a quart size Ziploc freezer bag with a permanent marker.

2)  Crack 2 eggs (large or extra large) into the bag (not more than 2) and shake to combine them.

3)  Put out a variety of ingredients such as cheese, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc.

4)  Have each person add their ingredients of choice to their bag and shake.  Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up.

5)  Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for 13-15 minutes.  You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot.  For more, make another pot of boiling water.

6)  Open the bags and the omelet will roll out easily.  Be prepared for everyone to be amazed.

These are nice to serve with fresh fruit and coffee cake. Everyone gets involved in the process and it’s a great conversation piece.  Imagine preparing these the night before and putting the bag in boiling water while you get ready. And in 15 minutes, you’ve got a nice omelet for a quick breakfast.

Thanks to my friend Karen for sending this to me in an email.

Have tried it, family and friends love it. Plastic problem? What do you think you do when you blanch veggies in plastic freezer bags? I wouldn’t do it in a regular plastic bag, but am not going to worry about the freezer bags. Worrying can cause just as many health issues !

Being frozen in plastic is one thing and cooking it with our food is another…. NO Thanks – scary

My family eats these all the time! They are absolutely fantastic, everyone gets to have the kind they want. They are super fast, super easy and super nutritious. They are also super safe. You want to make sure you use the heavy duty freezer bags as the sandwich bags can get too hot and melt. If you are worried about the safety, check out the ziplock site for reassurance. These “plastic” bags were specifically designed to be used with food safely. If you pass this up simply because you are afraid of plastic, you are truly missing out.

I don’t cook or reheat anything in plastic. It has got to seep, leak and such into the food at such high temps and I tend to think Ziplocs aren’t made for that kind of high temp “cooking.” Sounds like a fun idea, but I’ll pass too. I use glass or ceramic bowls with plastic tops to store my stuff, even in the freezer. I have cut a lot of plastic out of our lives and even take my cloth bags to CVS now ;o)

I wondered about the plastic issue too. And then I remembered that we often store our food in plastic containers or plastic bags. Then we reheat our food in those containers. Plastic is everywhere. It’s hard to get away from it.

LOL I thought for a minute that I dont want to cook in freezer bags.. but then I remembered that I already thaw frozen stuff in freezer bags in the microwave, and we ‘microsteam’ veggies in the bags they come in, so I’m already doing it anyway! I’m gonna try it.

Sounds fun! Just wondering if there might be any potential issues with cooking in plastic that isn’t designed to be cooked in (BPAs, etc.)?

I’m sorry, but I cannot fathom cooking in a plastic bag like that. It doesn’t seem healthy at _all_.
