In one of the most recent news, it has been disclosed that next year, the market would be seeing more solar chargers. And that is going to be quite true especially now that Wal-Mart would be selling such products in their stores all around the country. This is what ICP Solar Technologies Inc. has mentioned for they were the ones who created and developed these solar chargers that Wal-Mart would be selling.
The chargers come with the Coleman brand name and by next year, the United States could get one easily off any of the 2100 Wal-Mart stores here.
Sass Peress is the head for ICP Solar and he said, “Our sleek design and affordable, easy-to-use applications make it simple to harness the power of the sun for consumers’ everyday electricity needs. We expect to continue building on the Wal-Mart relationship and provide additional solar products going forward. Even in today’s volatile energy market, the desire for clean solar energy applications is stronger than ever.”

I’m trying to decide if this is a good use of the limited supply of photovoltaic cells. On the one hand, getting small charging loads off the grid and onto solar chargers will cut some of the phantom or vampire loads that chew up a good percentage of centrally generated electricity. I cut my own electricity use by about 30-40% just by getting rid of these phantom loads – but that was getting rid of them, not moving them off grid. So my concern here is that people who should just not be using something at all, will switch it to a solar charger and feel virtuous. Meanwhile, at a time when solar cells are pricey because of limited silicon stock, wouldn’t the cells be of more benefit if deployed on solar electric panels for home or solar plant electrical generation?
