” Discussing the birds and the bees with your child could be the key to protecting them from sexual abuse.
Are you uncomfortable with speaking to your children about sex? Well, you’re not alone. Many parents are unsure of how to broach the subject, or even wonder whether they should. Meg Hickley, author of Speaking of Sex finds that the task of sexual health education is made much easier if it’s approached like a science. “Many people are very afraid of the title sex education so I use body science because it puts adults at ease when they realize that I am simply going to be teaching children about their sexual health, and it puts the children at ease who are very grossed out about anything to do with sex. So I say we are going to learn about your body like a scientist.”
That makes sense and it’s something I never thought of. I think that G did the explaining with Jamie… it was just a guy thing. But I do remember my sessions with Britt. We had gotten into the habit of having long discussions about life while whe was sitting in the bathtub. She was about four and she never ran out of questiosn. One of the funniest, and one that I tape recorded was a great discussions on why fire flies light up. The bath time became “our time” and we both felt comfortable talking about anything she wanted to discuss. The facts of life just evolved.
I have to admit that I didn’t tell her anything more than what was necessary. It all depended on her age. But I do remember hearing horror stories from my own friends who literally freaked because they had begun to bleed at school and their moms hadn’t gotten around to explaining menstruation to them. Can you imagine??
