Current trends in floor fashions for the home are moving toward bold colors and even bolder patterns. Rugs and carpets are no longer the muted palettes and safe symmetrical designs of yesterday. Instead we’ve got concentric circles and Oriental flowers in bright reds, teals, and oranges, like these rugs from Foreign Accents (left) and Emma Gardner (right):

These contemporary styles now occupy as much as 50 percent of the rug market, whereas before they commanded only 5 percent.
With such bold “grounds”, I wondered how a room can be designed to make sure that everything still looks pulled together. These two rooms serve as inspiration (rugs by Company C):

You could do only two things and still pull off the look:
1. Use solid colors for the major furniture in the room. There’s enough happening on the floor that, unless you’re an old hand at designing, it’s best to keep everthing else simple.
2. Pull out one or two colors from the rug to coordinate the rest of your pieces. In the two examples above, the colors of the chairs can be found on the rugs, giving continuity to the arrangements.
If you’re tired of your drab-looking room, try infusing a burst of energy with a colorful and boldly patterned rug.
Happy decorating and happy homemaking!

Great insight on the newest trends in decorating one’s floors. I an searching for an area rug and after reading your post I am inspired to also be bold about the rug that I ultimately buy. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
These are fun designs and if the rugs are small , they can be put everywhere to jazz up a room (behind a sofa, under a piano, in a bathroom…). Serge Lesage rugs are great for this usage plus they are washable!
