Feeling Violated

thiefLast night I got home at 9:30 from my trip to see my parents.  I brought in our suitcases, but left the rest of the stuff in my van.  The thought came to me, Maybe I should start locking our van.  Someone could steal the carseats and they cost $150 each.  I hate living like a paranoid person.  I intended to lock the van, but got so busy doing other stuff that I forgot.

This morning I was getting in the van to go to church and noticed my glove compartment open with stuff hanging out of it and the things from my console on the floor.  I asked my husband if he had done it and he told me no, so I knew we had a thief.

We immediately checked my husband’s car and his glove compartment was open too.  The few dollars in coins that he had under the seat were gone.

Strangely, my cell phone (that I accidentally left in the car), my camera, and other possessions were still in the car.  Apparently, the person(s) was only looking for money.  Nevertheless, I feel violated.

I have to wonder if I should have locked my van, or if my window would be broken if I had.  Do you lock the doors when your vehicle is parked at your house?

I am so sorry! I know exactly how you feel. Our house was broken into this year. It is the worst feeling in the world. I used to get grounded if I left my car unlocked. Now I unfortunately leave it unlocked at home all the time. I have to do better but I have to manually unlock the door and with 2 kids, it’s a huge hassle!

I always lock my doors, but growing up my parents never did, and they still don’t! When I return to my small town and park my car at the farm, they make fun of me for locking my doors! However, my brain tells me it is the right thing to do– being a woman in a larger city. I lock my house when I am home too!

Oh, and you have every right to feel violated. About a month after my wedding, my dad’s vehicle was broken in to… with my wedding dress and other wedding items being stolen. Ironically, they missed the “good” stuff like my TV. I’d rather the thiefs had gotten that, but oh well… I still feel violated, and I felt horrible that my dad’s window got smashed in just because we packed everything the night before a long haul.

I can’t remember ever having to lock my doors anywhere that I have lived. I live on a street that mostly has older people. I think my van was a target because it was parked at the end of our driveway near the street. While I was out of town last week, my husband parked his vehicles in the main driveway so that the house wouldn’t look empty. When I got home, I had to park behind his vehicles. I’m glad they didn’t take any of my valuables, but it still feels pretty creepy.

Isn’t that a terrible feeling. I have had my car broken into several times over the years. The last time the same thing happened, my glove box was went through and the center counsel. I had $5 taken & a bag of snack chips that I keep in the car for the kids to eat at dance. I was surprised that the mastercard I had left in the center was still there. It was one of those rebates thing that had no money left on it, but you couldn’t tell. Sorry it happened to you, it does feel awful! Luckily they didn’t brake the windows. My husband truck was broke into & they broke the window to get in & steal the radio. Worse part was the truck was unlocked!

We never lock our car doors when we are home. We live in a very rural area. We are the last house on the street and it is a long driveway. Also our cars are so old and ugly no one would ever think there was something good in them!! When we go anywhere else I ALWAYS make sure the doors are locked. Heck I used to work at a Police dept. and I would lock my car when it was in the parking lot. Everyone used to laugh at me!!

I always lock the car doors if I’m out of the car and more than about 2 feet away from it and my mom always taught me from the time I was little to lock the doors when riding in it. I love that door locks are automatic now.

There are some cities, like Vancouver, where it’s cheaper to leave your doors unlocked so that addict thieves after the parking meter change don’t have to break your window to get it.

Still, I always lock the doors no matter where I am.

We have a VERY long driveway. It’s almost 1/4 mile long, up a huge hill, and there are 4 houses that share it. Every time a car goes up or down that hill, we ALL know it. Nobody strange could ever get by all those eagle eyes. So no, I don’t lock my car. There’s nothing to steal in it anyways, it’s the worst car in the lot, and there is someone awake and around 24/7 every day of the week.

When I lived in less safe environments, yes, I locked my car.

I always lock my car at night. Our neighborhood is pretty safe, but we’re only a couple of blocks from our little town’s downtown area. Sometimes late night troublemakers find their way into our neighborhood and steal things out of people’s cars.

I always have been a little paranoid and I like to make sure my cars are locked. For the last 6 years, my wife and I have lived on a tree-lined street that seems to be from another time. We live across the street from town cops, and often we don’t lock our cars. We’ve never had a problem. I’ve left tools in the front yard and they’ve stayed.

However, anywhere else I make sure my car is locked.

This too has happened to me. I thought my neighborhood was safe (being from the midwest and all) and used to never lock my car but then one weekend I went out to my car and the door was open. I thought this was strange and then noticed all of the change from my console was gone (except the pennies!). I too felt violated. From then on I locked my car. It then happened again the following year (around the same time of year) because I forgot to lock the door after a long workout. Then I just felt dumb.

    What a bummer!
I lock my door whenever I leave the car. I won’t even start driving until I make sure all the doors are locked. I think I heard one too many horror stories about carjackings and parking lot thefts at gun point when I was a kid. I’ve always been that way. Plus I live in a big, crime riddled city so that is extra incentive.
