Now here’s a large wind power gen project that has the locals overjoyed and enthusiastic, as opposed to rising up in NIMBY revolt. Located at Bangui Bay, in the Ilocos Norte province of the northern Philippines, this wind farm is the first source of clean energy to be introduced to the many-islanded nation of 84 million folks, thus far reliant upon oil and gas for their needs.
The project is the work of a private company, Northwind Power Development Corp, which is run by a Danish fellow and who received the bulk of its funding through no-interest loans provided by the Danish government.
15 turbines, standing on 23 story high masts, starting pumping out juice back in May and now provide 24.75 megawatts of power, 40% of the supply in the Ilocos Norte province. The boost in electricity supply has provided power to many in the region for the first time.
Costing more than 48 million dollars, which translates into about 2 million dollars per megawatt, is more than double the start-up cost of a normal power plant running on conventional fossil fuel and would not have been viable without the interest-free loans from the Danish International Development Agency.
Since the project has been completed, Niels Jacobsen, the president and CEO of the company has had government and state-owned power company officials from across the country requesting help to try and replicate these windmills throughout the country.

i am about to travel in denmark where the bangui, ilocos norte windmill operator/supplier came. i would like to share to everybody that i will shop for a better, affordable but of high quality windmill to bring here in our country. please help me introduce this to your leaders in all areas where there is a viable place to install such. too, my study with windmill in denmark means a would be success if given a chance by our national leadership. for those who are interested in this kind of talk, feel free to email me and i will gladly attend to have a talk as soon as possible.

This is great.. I hope this can help ILOCANO’S for their electricity needs.. Please support this project, this can help Ilocos norte and the whole philippines to grow more. Replicate the project nationwide…. this is productive…
I’ve read or heard somewhere that they’re adding a few windmills. I guess that proves that wind technology is viable in the Philippines.
We visited the Philippines after more than a decade and the first thing we wanted to see is the windmill in Ilocos Norte. I heard about it a couple of years ago from my relatives from Batac and being an engineer myself, I am very happy that such technology is now being utilised in the country. Thanks for the politician/s who thought about it.

Peace. We are building a chapel on the hills of Cadapli, Bangar, La Union. I would appreciate it very much if i could find someone who would help me build a windmill for a it’s suppy of power. I pray the costs would be within reach. Truly, this is the time for alternative power sources.

Our science high school PTA is thinking of a legacy project for our children. Is there any grant for building a windmill generator for schools that can help us build one, a first in a Philippine school? We have only a small amount of budget so a grant would really be of help. there is already competetion in power source there is ilocos norte? if there is competition, there is war price, so does it mean cost of the electric in ilocos norte will decellerate? if that so, that’s nice. how i wish our local government here in gensan can put up a windmill farm.
Am interested in small windmills for use in farm estate in Bolinao, located on the northwestern tip of Pangasinan province. The wind is strong in these island areas facing the east. This region used to be enjoying clean air but with the installation some ten years ago of a coal plant in Sual on the west and another in the south in Masinloc Zambales, the air situation has deteriorated. And it will continue in this populous province until an alternative source of clean energy is introduced in this region.
