Today I’ve got a homemade hair care smoothie recipe from Mahisha Dellinger, curly hair expert and creator of the CURLS natural/organic line of hair care products. I’ve also got a review coming up about the CURLS line, so I thought I’d first post a little info about the company.

CURLS is the first line of hair care products created specifically for biracial/multiracial women and girls with naturally curly hair; although after the company launched CURLS founder, Mahisha Dellinger realized that many women from all ethnic walks of life have to deal with curls so now the line is designed to help everyone with curls – from Caucasian (read me), African American, Latina, Asian and more
Dellinger’s passion for hair care began at an early age because of her own curls. She couldn’t find products that worked or that were affordable and became exhausted from her search for the “right product” for her naturally curly hair; which trust me I’m oh so on board with. My curls have been an issue since birth and totally frustrate me all the flipping time. But I digress.
In any case, this is the why of how CURLS came to be. The current line of products contain an exclusive blend of natural oils and quality ingredients, such as aloe leaf juice, panthenol, mango, shea and murmur butter. PLUS many of these products contain organic ingredients (yay) and less chemical gunk that you don’t want in your hair.
I’ve been looking for an organic hair product for my own curls that ACTUALLY works for a long time now, so I was super happy when CURLS sent me some samples of their curl care products to test out. Coming up, I’ll post my review and let you know if CURLS lives up to the hype, but first a very cool recipe from Mahisha that you can make yourself at home…
Mahisha’s At-Home Milk & Honey Tress Smoothie – Pre/Post Swim Treatment
- 1 can of pure coconut milk (rich moisturize – hydrates, conditions and de-frizzes hair)
- 1 ripe organic avocado (natural source of protein – chlorine robs the hair of protein)
- 2 tablespoons of pure honey (conditions and adds sheen)
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil (hydrophobic oil that acts as a barrier to chlorine and salt water)
Directions:
Add ingredients to blender. Mix at high speed until your concoction reaches a smoothie consistency. Store in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
You can warm up your hair smoothie in the microwave before next application.
Instructions for Use:
- Section hair into 4 segments.
- Generously apply evenly to hair, from root to ends concentrating on ends…as they are the most prone to damage.
- Smooth hair into a protective style (e.g. braided ponytail, or bun).
- Enjoy your day at the pool, lake, or ocean!
Stay tuned for a review of some CURLS products.

@Michelle – I’d check out their website and see if they ship to where you are. I don’t know if they do or not.
Hi, this is just awesome, I have curly hair that tends to frizz all the time, the product that I normally would use was discontinued & now I sit without any leave in product that can hold my curls without turning rock hard. Are these products available in South Africa, & if possible where? Regards Michelle
Love the recipe. Thanks. I like to choose hair care products that have sound organic ingrediants like olive oil, but when you look on the back of the bottle you usually find , besides water, that the bulk of the product is made up of things you can’t pronouce. I’ll have to try this on my crazy curls.
