New Baby Almost Here

This weekend was filled with anxiety and excitement. My wife is due on January 31st but she has gone a couple of weeks early in the past. It still seems a bit too early, maybe a week or two, but you women out there who have had kids know when it is almost time. The pressure, the feelings, the contractions. She told me last night she isn’t far off. Here is how the conversation went.

Wife: I think I am gonna go soon.

Me: Huh? Wha? You mean now?

Wife: No not now but definitely soon.

Me: Soon for me could mean something totally different than soon for you. So what do you mean soon?

Wife: I dunno…. (long pause…. holding her tummy…. breathing weird)

Me: Soon as in 24 to 48 hours or like a week?

Wife: Yeah

Me: Yeah what? 24 to 48 hours or like a week?

Wife: Well… I got those feelings like I did with the lasts ones right before I went into labor.

Me: (As patient and nicely as I can) Can you work with me here? Like give me a time table or something.

Wife: Definitely soon.

Me: (Rolls eyes) Should I start getting things ready? (Remember we have our kids at home with a midwife)

Wife: Yeah that might be a good idea.

Me: Really? Wow, so you are getting close then??

Wife: Yes I told you that.

Me: But what is close? A week, 3 days, 24 hours??

Wife: Why are you hounding me about this??

Me: (Walks away and cleans kitchen)

When I find out more I will be sure to let you know.

Inside Fatherhood » Dads, You Need to Know the Realities of Labor

[...] I have labor on the mind, sorry… but rightly so. My wife is about to give birth to our 5th child. Though we seem to be pros by now in this entire ordeal, especially where we have dilivered all of our kids so far at home, we still tend to go through the same spikes in anxiety, frustration in the fact the baby isn’t out yet, exhaustion from sleepless nights and back rubs, and all the other normal parts of pregnancy at nine months. [...]

How’s it going? Any more Q&A lately? How is the wife feeling? I hope this isn’t my last pregnancy. I love being pregnant and the whole labor thing is a joy for me. My sister is the opposite. Sounds like your wife and I have a lot in common, excpet that she is a powerful woman to do it at home and I am a wus!

Expecting a baby is one of the most wonderful feelings, for both parents.

Your conversation made me laugh, reminded of a similar ones we’ve had while expecting our baby.

    All the best!

Aye, aye, aye! Too exciting, the tension, the build-up!

Steve: You’re lucky she didn’t smack you with all the questions you were asking. She must be nicer than me. ;)

I wouldn’t know about what women feel before they go into labor. I’ve never gone into labor on my own. I had to be induced with both of mine. My first child was 2 weeks late.

She said, “definitely soon”. Geesh. What more do you need? Shouldn’t you be able to read her mind by now?!?! ;)
