Obama – Education or Mind Control of Youth?

On Tuesday, September 8, the first day of school for many students, President Obama plans to address the nation’s school children, piping his speech from the White House  into all schools (that have the technical ability).  This has raised a furor among many parents.

They are wondering if it’s truly education or is it mind control of our youth?  Some claim it’s an opportunity to start molding young minds with Obama’s socialist agenda.  Obama spokesmen says it’s purely an educational event, with the President talking about the value of an education.

Parents have expressed the desire, if their children’s school views the speech, that youngsters have the choice of watching or not. Many parents also are wondering why it isn’t broadcast in the evening when parents can determine whether their youngsters watch it.  Or they can discuss the event as a family.  Why is it being broadcast during the school day when parents may not have the opportunity to see and hear it?

The White House web site also has published lesson plans and ideas for teaching about Obama, the presidency and education.  There are questions to ask, projects to undertake, and discussion possibilities.  Some feel these plans have an Obama related agenda, while others consider them to be purely an extension of information about the presidency.

How do you see this event? Do you want your children to watch…or not?  Do you want them to have a choice of watching or having a study hall or reading time.  Do you want many before and after activities utilizing the lesson plans?

Thanks, everyone, for joining in the discussion and voicing your ideas. That’s what is still great about America…we can voice our opinions. Apparently there also was controversy, from the other side of the fence, when Bush spoke to the school children.

Good morning to all! I am very please to hear that “our” President will be addressing the youth on September 8th. Oh, I wished I had the opportunity that our youth are getting now. It seems to me that every time our brothers or sisters of any race make a difference or try to attempt to make a difference in this world some body some where as something negative to say. Parents you have a right whether or not your child listens to President Barack Obama . But, has it ever crossed your mind what your child thinks about it? I asked my child and he was thrilled about hearing what President Obama has to say to “THEM.” It is personal now the children actually feel like what they say matters. Be happy or our children may never have this opportunity again!!

The president should be someone who is shown respect. He should be seen as a role model to show that everyone can aspire and work hard to achieve their dreams. Working hard in school would be one way to do that, and encouragement by the president to do so would be a good thing not a bad thing.

I think there are a lot of fanatics fueling the fire to create unrest in order to promote their own agenda. If we stop projecting our own fears as truth and instead research the real facts, we might be surprised. Keeping an open mind and doing our own research is much better than following blindly no matter who is in charge.

I think it’s fine that he’s doing it. Kids need heroes. The younger ones will benefit from hearing from the President of the United States, and the older ones will get the opportunity to think about what he says and decide if they buy it.

Both groups get to watch some allegedly sane adults lose their minds, too.

Obama: Should He Talk to Your Kids? : Blisstree - Family, Health, Home and Lifestyles

I agree with Mary Jo – well, and everyone else, in school, most schools, they teach all about all sorts of history. We were forced to learn about US topics, presidents, and all sorts of stuff. I cannot believe people are complaining about this all over the news and web. What the heck is he going to say that offensive or controlling to kids? I mean really. Cedar, my son, goes to a private free democracy school that sets their own schedule, so school doesn’t start til the 14th but I’d have no issue with him watching it. During the elections, staff at Cedar’s school set up pretend voting booths, offered insight on pros and cons of both sides and let the kids make up their own minds about who to vote for.

If we don’t expose our kids to the issues surrounding government now, what makes us think they’ll care about the issues later on?

Goodness, this isn’t Hitler we’re talking about here. Both Reagan and George Sr. gave speeches at schools. Why is this so different?

The people getting upset don’t like or trust Obama, obviously.

Mind control? Seriously? Children are influenced a million times more by the opinions of their parents than by a short speech from the president.

When I was in school we learned all about the president(s). Their background, families, and politics. Clearly this came through a filter of some sort, whether it was administrative or just the through the teacher. And I remember a television being rolled into the classroom to hear a speech or view a particularly important historical event. Again, the decision to do this must have passed through some filter(s).

Whether one agrees with his political point of view or not, there is some respect due to anyone holding the office of President. To consider his speech “mind control” shows a lack of respect for the office and for the intelligence of our youth.

And on a lighter note, I’m sure many a parent has wished for the ability to “mind control” their child, getting them to behave, get better grades, or to stop acting out. Suggesting one speech can do what a parenting cannot seems a huge disconnect to me.

….our president can’t even talk to the nation’s children without being accused of mind control!? WHAT. THE. HELL. I would love to have been able to grow up and say I heard a speech by the president as a child!

Everyone needs to get over their political spectrum’s and go back to being an American who believe sin their leader.
