One Green World Fall Garden Sale!

One Green World is an Oregon local nursery, but they’ll ship all over the U.S. This is very cool, especially if you want to buy from an eco-friendly plant nursery. One Green World is the first Oregon nursery to receive Salmon Safe Certification. Salmon-Safe is an independent nonprofit organization devoted to restoring agricultural and urban watersheds so that salmon can spawn and thrive they certify places like vineyards, neighborhoods, and more. One Green World was recognized by Salmon Safe for “using drip irrigation and mulching, preventing erosion by using cover crops between tree rows and on fallow fields, using natural methods to control weeds and pests and maintaining at least 50 foot setbacks from streams, providing a vegetated riparian buffer zone.

Other eco perks of this nursery include:

  • On-staff sustainability company director.
  • All of their tractors and farm equipment plus company vehicles and deliveries run on B99 biodiesel.
  • The company actively recycles all plastics, cardboard, paper, metal, glass, motor oil, batteries and potting soil. In fact, their entire 66-acre nursery (including a private residence) has only one 90-gallon garbage can which is one of the more amazing green facts I’ve heard all week.
  • They use 100% biodegradable starch peanuts and reused newspaper for packing and shipping plants.
  • CFLs and energy efficient light fixtures are used throughout the property.
  • And more.

PLUS right now they’ve got an Autumn special going on. If you place an order between now and October 31st, 2009, you’ll get $5 off a $50 order.

What they carry:

One Green World carries fruit trees, vines, nut trees, berries, Northwest natives, ornamental and more. Lots of beautiful varieties can be seen at their website.

If you’re an Oregon local you can join them for their Harvest Festival Event on October 10th from 10AM to 4:30 PM, where they’ll have locally grown fruit to sample, plus juice, preserves, and ice cream, all made from the same varieties you can grow. Take an orchard tour or talk with plant experts. Of course you can also take home plants.

Sorry to say I’ve got some bad news about the so called “eco-friendly” One Green World. I’d be writing this to the CEO or owner but I can’t seem to find out who that is. I bought almost $150 worth of their plants. They arrived very professionally packed. When my husband asked about the Empress tree I told him that it could grow 12ft or more in one year. He said “no way” so we went on line and I showed him that was true. However I also found out that it is on an invasive plant list. I called One Green World and talked with someone who had to pass me off to the supervisor. I wanted to get exchange the tree for something else of the exact same price. And I wanted them to pay for the shipping. After all they made no mention of the Empress tree possibly being invasive in the write-up. The tree can produce up to twenty million seeds! As if that isn’t bad enough, the way the supervisor condescended to me was not acceptable. When I told her that it was an invasive plant she retorted “not in my state”. I reminded her that they ship to other states. She told me if I interrupt her there was no use in continuing our conversation. I thought she was going to hang up on me. And no, I was civil. Then she said, I should have thoroughly researched the plant before I purchased it. Kind of like the Tobacco industry’s spin. She was rude and totally unprofessional. Not service oriented or ecologically concerned. I am returning the tree at my expense but she indicated it may not be accepted. Wow. I am, however, green oriented and concerned about my footprint as well as my impact on my neighbors. Therefore I will not support this company any longer. Heide Horeth
