Redeeming Hotpoints for Birthday Gifts

The global economic crisis is indeed, global. It’s far reaching than most people realize. I decided this year to redeem the hotpoints earned from our credit card purchases to buy birthday presents for our loved ones. This saves me from shelling out my hard-earned dollars and still give me the ability to spoil my family.

Case in point: It’s my Husband’s birthday on the 30th and I’ve been racking my brain for the perfect birthday present for him. Apart from his motorbikes and related accessories, he doesn’t really ‘want’ much. I’ve been giving him motorbike-related gifts or things for his motorbike dismantling shop over the last few years that this year, I vowed this year will be different.

I was scouring the hotpoints website of our local bank when I came across the ‘Experience’ section of this site. The items that you can redeem under this category are of ‘experiences’ rather than a physical item. For my Hubby’s birthday, I selected the ‘learn to fly a plane’ as his birthday present.

It cost me about 29,000 points to redeem but $0 in actual dollars so I am happy with this ‘purchase’. I just hope that he doesn’t read this post of mine before the 30th or else, it’ll spoil the surprise! :-)

What about you? What other home budgeting tips can you share with me and our readers?
