A film about faithfulness, “Hachiko: A Dog’s Tale” is one to watch this fall. The film stars Richard Gere, but the true star is the Atika puppy, and later dog, Hachi.

The flick is based on a 1987 Japanese film, “Hachiko Monogatari.” But even that movie was based on a true story about the utterly devoted dog who lived during the 1920s and 30s in Japan. The story of Hachiko, representing friendship and loyalty, has inspired the Japanese people for generations. Though the Gere film takes place in Rhode Island, it is said to otherwise stay close to its roots.
As you’ll see in the trailer below, Hachi remains devoted even after his owner dies. The dog still makes his trek to the train station to meet his owner at the same time as always. The real life Hachiko continued his train station trips for 10 years, always at the same time his deceased owner used to arrive. Hachiko’s stuffed remains are on display at the National Science Museum of Japan.
The film, pretty much guaranteed to make you cry, also stars Jason Alexander, Sarah Roemer and Joan Allen.
