According to an Interior Design class at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the following are the top ten decorating faux pas that people commit in designing their homes:
* Don’t keep and display every memento.
* Don’t mix-and-match too many styles or themes.
* Don’t put items together just because they are all one color. Differences in shades and tones exist within one color family.
* Don’t buy paint for an entire room without testing it on a small area first.
* Don’t be afraid forego “safe” plastic mini-blinds in favor of more creative window treatments.
* Don’t apply a theme, such as sunflowers or ivy, to every single fixture or decor.
* Don’t pair unevenly scaled items, such as an oversized sofa with a single small artwork.
* Don’t rely on a single overhead fixture to light a room. Use lamps to add interest and mood.
* Don’t put all the furniture against the walls of a room. Create small living areas within a larger space to promote interaction and use the space effectively.
* Don’t tackle do-it-yourself projects that require more time, talent and money than you are willing to invest.
