People who always seem to save money actually have a method to the madness. I’ve known a ton of thrifty people, read plenty of books on money saving, and tried to stay thrifty myself, and here are the most common rules I’ve seen all these folks use.

They research first and buy later: With all the amazing information on the Internet nowadays, there is no reason not to completely review a product before buying. You may find that cheaper car you like is not such a bargain when you read that repairs on it are costly.
They ponder, consider, and re-think most, if not all, purchases: Blindly buying items is never how smart thrifty folks save money. They find a product and carefully consider if it’s necessary, useful, and a good deal before plunking down their cash.
They’re crafty: They cook homemade meals, learn to sew, and most of all come up with ideas about how they might get the same item for less. For example – if they see a cool coat in a style they love new, they may consider searching online for a deal or look at used clothing shops for a similar style. Or they realize that growing their own organic veggies is cheaper than store bought.
They don’t buy junk: Little breakable plastic toys, endless bags of non-nutritious chips, a cheap lamp that will break in a few years, and so on. They buy useful stuff and items that have longer-term value.
They identify their priorities about money: It doesn’t matter the priority; buying a house, taking a trip, paying off the car, or what have you. These people know what they’re saving for and have goals in place.
