What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

Boy looking through magnifying glass

How old were you when you knew what you wanted to do for a living?

On one hand, I think kids usually have an inkling early on in regards to what they “want to be when they grow up.”  I knew I wanted to be a writer as soon as I could hold a pencil.  Still, I was always told to go into something like banking because that’s more of a “real job.”

To that end, I would have benefited from some real career counseling.  For example, while writers make little money and usually don’t have benefits, it doesn’t mean you can’t do it for a living.  There are countless opportunities if you just know where to look.  As an adult, I know this now.  As a kid?  Not so much.

It seems as if today schools and parents are more aware of career counseling than ever before.  I caught this article about some Mankato area businesses working with educators to show kids what kind of careers they could go into.  That’s a great thing, and can only open up the possibilities for them.

My question for you today is, how old were you when you knew what you wanted to do?  And how did you decide?

I always thought I would be a teacher. I “knew” at a pretty young age 4th or 5th grade. But it didn’t work out that way but I do love my job and I have “taught” lots of young people (my sons friends always came to me, my current secretary is my sons age and I feel like I have watched her blossom into an awesome young woman) so in a way I am “teaching” just in a different way.

I’m in my 40′s and still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up! I have done everything from social work to coffee sales to law enforcement. *sigh* All that, and I went to school for business administration!

I’ve always wanted first and foremost to be a wife and mother. Some people think that is the bottom of the career goal….I think it’s at the top.

I’m 49 and still don’t know what I want to do for a living. It’s one of the reasons I never finished college. I love to work, though, and have been good at everything I’ve ever tried, so I think that’s enough for me.
