Sure, you could simply put up drapes to dress up your windows. You could even make your curtains more personalized to fit in with the rest of the decor of your house. But rather than use traditional curtains at all, you could also try for a really unique look. After all, your windows deserve the same attention to detail that the rest of your house does. Why throw up some store bought curtains that fade into the background? Here are some ideas for making unique window treatments.

Shelves with Beautiful Glass
Put a shelf in front of the top of your window, and place different colors of glass along the top of the shelf. This is especially great if you collect a certain type of glass, like cranberry or cobalt blue. When the sun shines, your room will sparkle much brighter than if you had a curtain over the window. The sun will naturally bring the colors from the glass right into your space. If you are looking for a funkier type of treatment, you could also vary the types of glass for a rainbow effect.
Handkerchiefs
Old fashioned hankies are so beautiful, it’s a shame to shove them in a drawer. If you have some handed down from grandma, iron them and use them as your window treatment! Just drape them over the top of the curtain rod, or even an existing curtain. No sewing involved, and it’s a great way to use all those old hankies you have received over the years that you just can’t get rid of.
Quilt
If you have an heirloom quilt you’re not sure what to do with, consider using it for your window treatment. Fold it in a way that covers the top of your window but still allows you to see the pattern of the quilt. Drape it over the rod and adjust until you’re satisfied.
Old Scarves
Some ladies have tons of scarves they still love but don’t wear. Clean them up and place them over the top of your window instead. This adds color and your own unique personality to the tops of the window.
