I’m always talking about contacting your local Cooperative Extension office about region specific gardening questions, but we haven’t really talked about this at length.

The Cooperative Extension System is a nationwide, non-credit educational network. Each U.S. state and territory has their own state office along with a network of local or regional offices. All the offices are staffed by experts who can help local residents with information regarding issues such as gardening, agricultural, 4H, sustainable living, and more.
To locate gardening resources, including your local Master Gardener Program and other advice visit the regional map for Cooperative Extension System Offices throughout the U.S. Click on your state.
After clicking on your state you’ll usually see County Extension Center links. Find your county, click it and see what resources they offer for gardeners. For example, my local extension office offers Programs, projects, and resources such as the Master Gardener Program, Gardening Hints (on a wide variety of topics), Gardening Calendars, Garden Information for Northwest Gardeners, Sustainable Gardening: The Oregon-Washington Master Gardener Handbook, and more.
The Master Gardener program in your state will offer expert training and advice in all areas of gardening and in return you’ll volunteer to help out one or more garden projects in your community. Some counties offer non-volunteer options where you pay to learn vs. volunteer, and some even offer online training course now. This is a great way to gain low-cost know-how in all aspects of gardening.
