Why I love small looms

A few reasons why I love small looms:

1. There is no loom waste. I hate wasting yarn, especially handspun. With small looms, they are directly warped and worked to the full expanse of the loom.

2. They are small enough to carry along when leaving home- whether it’s a short jaunt out, or a long trip.

3. Weaving on small looms allows me to change my mind and to ‘sample’ colors, textures, pattern and a multitude of other variables.

4. Weaving on small looms allows me to think in modules…. making small units and assembling them into larger units that become all manner of wonderful accessories, garments, dolls and toys.

5. Weaving on small looms is easy on my body. I don’t stress and strain tendons and muscles and joints when working with small looms.

6. The most important thing for me about weaving with small looms is that I find them to be the source of unlimited creativity and inspiration! I just love them…. they make my heart sing!

Oh, Noreen, I couldn’t agree with you more re small looms! My favorites are small tri and square looms which I work in continuous weave method, where the warp forms along with the weft.

For me, too, small looms seem to fit my need for completing something quickly and my need for change. It’s easy to be creating small pieces for several different projects and work with different yarns.

For some time, I had a sense that small-loom weaving was not “real” weaving…but since discovering your blog last year, I have been inspired and encouraged to create all kinds of things that are “real” from the little tri’s and squares, and to construct in unusual ways.
